"To create one's world in any of the arts takes courage" -Georgia o' Keeffe

Research a new technique and process that extends and challenges your current remit of skill. I will need to research my chosen technique, Whilst still retaining in the same themes and ideas from my last project, incorporating new media and a new spin on things.

Virtual insanity continued- Alphabetics
Lyrics:
Oh yeah, what we're living in (let me tell ya)
It's a wonder man can eat at all
When things are big that should be small
Who can tell what magic spells we'll be doing for us
And I'm giving all my love to this world
Only to be told
I can't see
I can't breathe
No more will we be
And nothing's going to change the way we live
'Cause we can always take but never give
And now that things are changing for the worse,
See, its a crazy world we're living in
And I just can't see that half of us immersed in sin
Is all we have to give these
Futures made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound for we all live underground
And I'm thinking what a mess we're in
Hard to…
Oh yeah, what we're living in (let me tell ya)
It's a wonder man can eat at all
When things are big that should be small
Who can tell what magic spells we'll be doing for us
And I'm giving all my love to this world
Only to be told
I can't see
I can't breathe
No more will we be
And nothing's going to change the way we live
'Cause we can always take but never give
And now that things are changing for the worse,
See, its a crazy world we're living in
And I just can't see that half of us immersed in sin

The importance of this song may seem very apparent. The Themes of virtual insanity have lead me here to this song by an artist called Jamiriquai, After discovering their work with this phrase i'd like to analyse their work and understand their message, and incorporate their words into my Next two weed- project
The reason I've chosen a song above all things is that song can be divided into two different aspect. One which i have visited before and will prove as a useful link back to my older work, Alphabetics. Their songs are made up of words, And more importantly, letters. A song is the communication of a feeling or moment, And this song from 96 shows what sort of world they were headed in ( 1996 is another useful link to my working past as it is the era i was most focused on)
as for the new things I am ought to try, Sound is where I'm looking for next. The song after all isn't read as music, It is heard. I will be working closely with the lyrical art and the structuring of their words, Stripping it back and making it my own, as well as the sound. perhaps working with distortions and other effects to change the tone of the song entirely whilst keeping a firm grip on the message.

My idea
My idea So far is that I know i want to work with video, Perhaps Recording old things and emphasise the look and aesthetic of that 1990's age. As the song plays in distorted and new ways in the background I want To push forward the idea that the world they are moving into is one of new and ever progressing technology, and that humans are slave to this new lifestyle. I think picking apart the words will help me get new ideas. I'll be giving my interpretation of the lyrics. and by no means does this imply this is the actual meaning. this is my own discovery.
Oh yeah, what we're living in (let me tell ya)
Start of the song paralleling with the world the 90's was travelling into at that time. shows the world that is about to be born ( new technologies were created)
It's a wonder man can eat at all
When things are big that should be small
Who can tell what magic spells we'll be doing for us
And I'm giving all my love to this world
Only to be told
I can't see
I can't breathe
Not being able to see or breathe on your own without the comforts of buying new things, we rely so heavily on things we buy, without them we cvan barely function ( internet, telephone and other modes of communication )
No more will we be
And nothing's going to change the way we live
As technology progresses there's nothing we can do to stop this madness taking over our world, we will end up living this way forever.
'Cause we can always take but never give
And now that things are changing for the worse,
Take more from nature, give nothing back. or to each other as human beings. our ambitions to be a technologically advanced race overtakes our desire to be happy with what we have, and to be happy. to like each other as much as we like our world. have we gone too far? when is enough enough? when we have replaced everything with technology, even our bones and our hearts? we may only stop when we are no longer human, but machines.
See, its a crazy world we're living in
And I just can't see that half of us immersed in sin
humans getting more engrossed in capitalism
Is all we have to give these
Futures made of virtual insanity now
Virtual world, we are living in a world being shaped by social media, online shopping (capitalism) video games, online communication, beedy eyes watching us over the internet. it's a fake reality. this is almost not what beintg human is about. we are hooked up to a machine
Always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
The line speaks for itself really, But it's a real emphasis on the worry the art6ist has for the world. technology is overtaking and all they can do is sit back and watch the robots, virtual reality headsets take over the world, technology from mobile, phones, to internet. everyhting is changing. and they dont seem to like it.
Oh, now there is no sound for we all live underground
Living underground. trapped in our houses never leaving, obsessed with the internet. we dont need to leave. we have everything we want. right?
And I'm thinking what a mess we're in
Hard to…
Artist ends in a half sentance. have they given up on the world?

Here is a website that lets you download fonts. I've decided to go with the VHS font, as it is reminiscent of retro, 80's/90's VHS tape.

working with sound
|
25th January, 2017. In class we were introduced to adobe audacity, Despite being well versed in technology, I am not familiar with every adobe product, so in that case audition was entirely new to me. Today I was experimenting with a new media i have never tried before, sound. though I work with video a lot in my past, working specifically with sound alone still feels like anew experience, I only worked with it on my radio shows, if all but very briefly. I've been editing this song, the song discussed above by stretching the sound out to last longer, and lowering the pitch given off, which has given it an old, creepy even nostalgic stylised version of this very famous song. A version that I hope when presented with the lyric and the right imagery, It will give off its primary message in a new and interesting way.
I look inspiration from a Vaporwave song called "Macintosh plus" which is most likely the most popular song in the genre, int his very underground, unknown genre. ranking 19,998,896 views at the time of writing this.,
Macintosh plus was created by an artist called Vektroid, who in her time, has created many popular songs under many aliases and different usernames, she doesn't use the same one for very long. like all things on the internet. some people prefer anonymity and a no real sense of identity, re-inforcing the message i've been talking about, our humanity changes as we escape into the virtual world. the style of the song is very slow, with lower pitches voice tracks and a slow, dreamy sounding melody. I've tried to mimic this by slowing down the song i've used for this video. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vektroid |

Trying new things again
I decided to try weaving, just to see if i could incorporate it into my work at any point. Although I i don't plan on taking this idea much further, because it doesn't incorporate many non-traditional techniques, I did have a lot of fun making it. It was a strange machine that let me thread fabric in between two layers of string before swiping them over and repeating. this technique was very interesting because it allowed me to see how the fabric was being constructed in real time, and i seamlessly transitioning from one colour to another was not hard at all, it was a very practical and engaging way of creating fabric. I painted the symbol over the top of the fabric in black acrylics, it's a nice bold colour and dries hard to secure it.
Instillation - How Am I going to Display my work?
Halfway through the editing process of my video, And something dawned upon me; how am I actually going to display this video? I have this heavy theme of virtual reality, and losing ourselves in the convenience of modern brands, the internet, and technology. If this is going to be a video of true significance, I need a significant way of expressing it: enter virtual Reality headset.
New media- Virtual reality.
( picture of boy wearing VR headset is of Sam Salameh 18 years old, Creative media Production, Henley college.) I've never worked with Virtual reality before in my life. I've played around with it. but have never considered the prospect of making one. I want my audience to be involved in a virtual reality experience, as an active member in the video. In the autumn of 2016, Me and a few friends visited Thorpe park for the Halloween. This season opened up a new Attraction, headed by Famed Illusionist Derren brown. His virtual reality Horror game was called The Ghost train. More sources can be found here: https://www.thorpepark.com/2017 And Derren's ride wasn't very good at all. To give it a quick review, they put a lot of money into this thing, but had nothing to show for it. it glitches out of control at most times and You had no sense of atmosphere. I've learned from such a boring experience that I want to get this right.
I was looking around to see if i could pull this off with no budget. and i managed to find this brilliant free app called VRplayer on the App Store. that allows you to convert any video you like from youtube, etc into either a 360 degree peice, or 2d piece, or even a fixed piece. you can do anything with it. I want to experiment with a Range of ways at looking at my edited video. which will be a useful technique to help show people my video. |
(picture is of Tom Dale, 18- a student in my Foundation art class testing out my video) The definition of virtual reality comes, naturally, from the definitions for both ‘virtual’ and ‘reality’. The definition of ‘virtual’ is near and reality is what we experience as human beings. So the term ‘virtual reality’ basically means ‘near-reality’. This could, of course, mean anything but it usually refers to a specific type of reality emulation.
We know the world through our senses and perception systems. In school we all learned that we have five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. These are however only our most obvious sense organs. The truth is that humans have many more senses than this, such as a sense of balance for example. These other sensory inputs, plus some special processing of sensory information by our brains ensures that we have a rich flow of information from the environment to our minds. -http://www.vrs.org.uk/virtual-reality/what-is-virtual-reality.html |
propose people use the virtual reality headset i have provided. it is a great handle to hold movie phones and show off a video. I think this will be successful because the viewer would be immersed in an instillation that they are actively involved in. the Virtual reality headset IS the instillation. and become a part of the art. it is sort of ironic how we are showing off this person in a video who cannot detach from technology, yet we require the piece of work to be viewed by the very same means as the techno-victim. it might make people laugh, and then it might make them think. overly with this I'm not trying to make anyone view technology as good or bad, I love it, yet I'm able to experiment with the implications and potential issues surrounding it.
