Soviet Montage
The soviet montage as pioneered by Sergei Eisenstein, A film Director and theorist who invented the idea of a montage, Displaying several clips to help the audience understand the story moving forward with images, videos and music. Although A lot of innocent people where killed during the making of this montage, It has helped us to understand how a montage is made. they decided to re-create the events that happened during the 'October revolution'. you can tell this is an old montage because it is being used for political reasons, and not for entertainment. This montage is different to modern day montages because it serves a political purpose- to show how glorious The Russians claim they are, And brainwashing the nation to think the same way.
Modern montages
These are modern montages, From Disney's' Wreck it Ralph' and Pixars ' the Incredibles' They, much like the soviet montage show a story being moved along with quick cuts and music, This has progressed on from the soviet montage because it's not being used to brainwash an entire nation in order to get them to join a cause, these are being used in movies to entertain audiences, it is able to show many months in the characters lives, Quickly summed up in a few minutes, Like in the incredibles, Int he Wreck it Ralph sequence you can see the main characters are learning to bond and are learning new skills, this montage however only covers A day's worth of activity, unlike the incredibles who cover several weeks or months.,
Example of a Jump cut.
Examples of match cutting.
match cuts is when one scene quickly blends into another, usually cutting between two shapes that look the same, I.E The plug hole and the human eye. This has helped editing because it makes it more interesting for the audience to look at this bizarre transition and can help to make the footage seem strange, which is a good thing. . It confuses the viewer as they believe that sometimes the editing between the two scenes are so smooth it cane even feel like one scene. if you look closely at some of them, you cans see the transition between the objects. the most popular example of match-cutting is in 2001: a space Odyssey when The bone turns into a spaceship, however this is a very vague example. although the bone and the spaceship are similar shape, It still feels like it's not a very clean transition between the two.
